ORTHOTICS
Orthotics are
shoe inserts that correct an abnormal or
irregular walking pattern. Orthotics are more than “arch supports", though this
is a common term used to describe them. They perform functions that make
standing, walking, and running more comfortable and efficient. This is done by
slightly altering
the angles at which the foot strikes the walking surface.
Orthotics are a conservative treatment for
many foot problems (Heel Pain,
Bunions,
Arch Pain,
Neuroma,
Flat Feet) and a method of control after certain types of foot
surgery.
Orthotics come in various forms and may be made of different materials. All foot
orthotics are made to improve foot function and minimize the stress forces that cause pain.
Foot orthotics fall into two broad categories: Those that primarily attempt to
change foot function and those that are primarily protective in nature.
Functional Orthotics
The functional orthotic device may be made of a firm material such as plastic or carbon fiber, and is used primarily for walking or athletic shoes. The device generally extends along the sole of the heel to the ball of the foot. These orthotics are chiefly designed to control foot motion. These devices are long lasting, do not change shape and are usually very durable. Orthotics may improve or eliminate strains, aches and pains in the feet and legs.
Accommodative Orthotics
The accommodative orthotic, or soft orthotic, helps to protect
the foot by absorbing shock
and decreasing pressure at "hot
spots" or sore spots. It is usually constructed of
soft, cushiony material and may be molded directly to the foot or fashioned over an
impression of the foot. This orthotic usually extends from the heel to the end
of the toes.
The advantage of the soft orthotic is that it can be adjusted to
changing weight-bearing forces. The disadvantage is that it is not as durable as
a functional orthotic and may need to be replaced about 2-3 times a year. It is
very effective for arthritis and
deformed feet. It is also widely used in the care of the
diabetic foot. The soft orthotic is usually
a little bulky and may require extra
room in the shoe. Medicare may pay for 1 pair of shoes and
3 pair of soft, customized orthotics, per year, for people with diabetes.
